      <image:title>Work - Running Bride</image:title>
<image:caption>Digital transfer of Super 8 film, 2010-2011 This film presents one character, a bride, running across and through differing American geographies wearing a traditional white wedding dress. She is alone, which begs the question: From what is she running? Or is she running to something? Without cars, architecture or other contextual markers, the film floats in time – it could have occurred yesterday, or 50 years ago. There is no dialogue as the bride travels through varying landscapes and tackles difficult terrain as she continues to run…and run…and run (with an occasional rest to ponder or take a breath). Without apparent beginning or end, the effort expended far outweighs any particular goal or destination. The point invariably becomes the act of running itself, which becomes magnified and exaggerated to a humorous extent. It could be determination…or escape. The bride’s continual journey is reinforced by the landscapes themselves, with backdrops such as the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater Monument, Arches National Park, Mesa Verde, the Great Lakes, corn fields in the Midwest and areas around the Colorado Rockies. I’m interested in making a relationship between our culture’s ideas of marriage and some of the places that have a stronghold in our collective consciousness (parks, monuments, etc.) that we deem worthy of protecting as part of our national identity. These locations require a journey and bear a kind of iconic image of Americana that one recognizes on postcards and reproductions – even if they have never been to that place. This is a fitting metaphor for the bride, who recognizes the weight of marriage without “being there”. The film was shot with a hand held Super 8 camera, an additional reference to the nostalgia connected with ideas of matrimony and the existence of family movies often found having been discarded in attics and basements. I have fond memories of seeing such films of my own family when I was young girl.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Directions (Waist Series)</image:title>
<image:caption>Sewing patterns, latex rubber, wood embroidery frames, electrical elements. 2005-2006 This series explores sewing patterns as “directions” – both in a practical application to make a garment and also as societal cues and stereotypes. The actual patterns are decidedly feminine (ballerina outfits, cheerleader uniforms, princess dresses, etc), and all are the brand “Simplicity”. Overlapped between layers of latex rubber, the result is a kind of skin-like roadmap that confounds all sense of direction and resembles a confused blueprint that seems suspended in a skin-like pelt. Blatant text on the sewing patterns alludes to “correct” measurements and their corresponding sizes. Implicit, and yet forgiven, are the assumptions inherent in these patterns in terms of “normal” body size, when garment sizing systems have been shown to be highly divergent (a Liz Claiborne size 10 is very different than a size 10 from Victoria’s Secret). The diameters and titles of each form correspond to the waist sizes of celebrity women over the last fifty years. While most won’t admit it, we are fascinated by celebrity and are fastidious purveyors of body and appearance of those who are considered fashionable (and pay particular attention to the weight changes of famous women). A small light source illuminated the pattern from inside, highlighting the diagrammatical confusion of the forms as literal and metaphoric maps. 19”: Vivien Leigh 22”: Demi Moore (1980), Janet Jackson, Twiggy (1966), Teri Hatcher, Mariah Carey, Bo Derek (1983) 22 ½”: Raquel Welch (1966) 23”: Sally Field, Heather Locklear, Marilyn Monroe, Jennifer Aniston, Madonna (1990), Kate Moss 24”: Kim Basinger, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cindy Crawford, Cher, Cheryl Tiegs, Elle MacPherson, Christie Brinkley, Sophia Loren, Jane Seymour, Drew Barrymore, Cybil Shepherd (1986), Mia Farrow, Barbara Eden, Goldie Hawn, Alicia Silverstone, Jane Fonda (1968) 25”: Lucy Lawless, Madonna (1984), Candace Bergen 26”: Demi Moore (1996)</image:caption>

All lived and/or worked for part of their lives in Park County, Colorado, and their images are layered over topographical landscapes of nearby areas with historic mining sites I visited. These topographies were sourced from the earliest hand drawn surveys in the USGS collections. They were then redrawn as overlays to include specific locations of artifacts that indicate the presence of women. The text "she was here" can be seen on close inspection, referencing the location of the artifacts and where I stood in their presence. Here the women are embedded back into the landscapes their lives had impacted. Alluding to the presence of women at historic mining sites, there's also suggestions of the body as form and implement, and the impact of differing forces of technology and the hand. The materiality and physicality of artifacts also have the potential to tell their own stories and transport us back in time.</image:caption>
